The United States donated some P1.9 million ($34,500) worth of equipment to the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to boost its capability to maintain and repair its vessels, the US Embassy in Manila disclosed on Friday, Aug. 22.
The donations, which include a backup power supply, were turned over by the US Department of State’s Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL) headed by Director Kate Riche to the Coast Guard Fleet led by its commander, Rear Adm. Rommel Supangan in a ceremony on Aug. 18.
Supangan said the donations would enhance the capabilities of the Coast Guard Fleet’s Maintenance and Repair Group (MRG) Workshop in Sangley Point, Cavite.
The PCG’s 400-square-meter Fleet MRG Workshop in Sangley Point aims to enhance maintenance and repair capability for small boats and systems aboard larger patrol vessels, complementing the MRG facility in the Manila Port Area.
It was inaugurated in May 2024 as a joint initiative among the INL, the Joint US Military Assistance Group Philippines (JUSMAG-PH), and the PCG. Its construction worth P54 million ($950,000) was funded by the US Department of Defense. Meanwhile, its design and outfitting were funded by the INL in partnership with the US Coast Guard.
Supangan said the support was a “meaningful step forward” in the cooperation between the PCG and the US government to promote maritime security.
Meanwhile, the INL vowed to continue supporting the Coast Guard Fleet’s MRG as they operationalize their maintenance facility and address vessel sustainment requirements comprehensively.
“This transfer of essential equipment and backup power supply will enable a broader and more effective equipment repair program,” Riche noted.
Riche said the INL and other US government agencies are planning to provide additional support to enhance the PCG’s capability to maintain its vessels through training programs, maintenance and logistic systems planning, and equipment donations for vessel operating stations in 2026.
