A 14-year-old student was electrocuted to death inside her school in the Island Garden City of Samal, Davao del Norte on Tuesday afternoon, Aug. 19.
The student of Mambago-B National High School was on her way home when she accidentally touched a live wire. Her friend attempted to rescue her but was also electrocuted.
They were taken to a hospital where the victim was declared dead from serious injuries. Her friend is recovering.
The Department of Education-Davao Region is conducting an investigation and authorities are inspecting the school’s electrical connection to avoid a repeat of the incident.
The victim’s family appealed for justice.
IGACOS Mayor Lemuel “Toto” Reyes has condoled and visited the family of the victim.
Reyes said they are providing financial and medical support. He has ordered a full investigation to prevent similar incidents.
He also urged prayers for the victim’s family.
The School Division Office of IGACOS expressed sadness over the incident.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and offer our prayers for the swift recovery of the injured learner. This loss profoundly impacts the entire school community, and we stand in solidarity with the families during this challenging time, embodying the empathy that all have expressed,” it said.
SDO IGACOS said they are closely collaborating with the school administration, local authorities, and relevant agencies to conduct a thorough investigation of the incident.
“Immediate measures are being taken to inspect and secure all electrical systems and school facilities to ensure the safety and well-being of all learners and staff, not just at the affected school but across all schools under our jurisdiction,” it added.
Support is also being provided to the affected families, including financial and medical assistance, psychosocial support, and other necessary interventions in coordination with the local government and other agencies, it said.
“We remain committed to fostering a safe and secure environment for every learner in our care.”
