Power distributor Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) has assured residents it is prepared to respond to power-related concerns as tropical depression “Isang” approaches.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) reported that as of 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 22, Metro Manila, Rizal and Laguna can expect light to moderate rainfall over the next three hours. Occasional heavy rains are forecast in Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas and Quezon.
No power interruptions or brownouts have been reported so far.
Joe Zaldarriaga, Meralco Vice President and head of corporate communications, said customers should take precautions during the storm, especially to avoid electrical hazards from potential flooding.
“We encourage our customers to be extra vigilant this rainy season and to observe safety measures before, during, and after a flood,” he said.
Meralco reminded residents to switch off the main electrical power switch or circuit breaker if there is a risk of flooding. It is also important to ensure electrical appliances are kept dry and handled with care. Whenever possible, appliances should be unplugged from wall sockets to prevent electrocution or damage.
In the event of water seeping into the home’s electrical system, Meralco strongly recommends contacting a licensed electrician rather than attempting any fixes to avoid potential fire or safety hazards.
