Manila city gov't holds disaster response meeting amid severe flooding

The Manila city government conducted a Special Local Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council meeting at the City Hall to discuss the onslaught of heavy rains and severe flooding brought about by the southwest monsoon (habagat) and Tropical Depression Isang on Friday, Aug. 22.
According to Manila Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso, the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) deployed vehicles to ferry stranded commuters in different parts of the city, particularly in areas with knee-deep flooding.
Domagoso also ordered the suspension of classes to ensure the safety of students and school personnel.
"Kasabay nito, naka-standby na ang ating mga kawani sa rescue teams ng Manila Department of Social Welfare upang tumugon sa mga nangangailangan ng agarang tulong. Minomonitor din natin ang mga critical areas na madalas bahain upang makapagresponde agad kung kinakailangan (Meanwhile, rescue teams of the Manila Department of Social Welfare are on standby to respond to those in need of immediate assistance. We are also monitoring critical areas that are prone to flooding to respond immediately if necessary)," he added, urging the public to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary.
Based on the DRRMO's latest flood monitoring as of 1:30 p.m., flooding has been reported in the following areas:
- PNU Taft - Knee deep
- Padre Faura to Intersection - Knee deep
- PNU to Ayala - Knee deep
- Taft in front of Adamson (To Kalaw) - Knee deep
- Taft to Underpass - Knee deep
- Manila City Hall to San Marcelino - Tire level
- Taft Padre Faura - Half tire deep
- Villegas to City Hall - Knee deep
