Carlo Biado and Johann Chua kept their fine form by outlasting their respective rivals to barge into the knockout round of the 2025 US Open Pool 9-Ball Championship at the Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City Thursday, Aug. 21 (Philippine time).
Tied at 3-3, the 41-year-old Biado imposed his will and took the next four racks to build a big lead and pull off a 9-5 win over Vietnam’s Luong Duc Thien.
The two-time World Pool Championship king set up a Round-of-64 showdown against Estonian Denis Grabe in the tournament that offers a $100,000 (around P5.7 million) grand winner’s purse.
Chua, for his part, extended his string of victories at the expense of his compatriot Roland Garcia, 9-7, to book his ticket to the next stage where he tangles with Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann.
Biado and Chua both went unscathed in the eliminations after sweeping their three assignments.
“Last 64! Laban,” Chua wrote on his social media post as he and Biado resume action this Friday, Aug. 22.
Aside from the two high-ranking aces, Marvin Asis, Michael Baoanan, Lee Vann Corteza, Bernie Regalario, Jefrey Roda, Harry Vergara, Roberto Gomez, and Baseth Mocaibat overcame their respective foes.
Two of those will have tough challenges ahead against the world’s rising stars as Vergara locks horns with Polish Wiktor Zielinski, while Corteza goes up against German Moritz Neuhausen.
Unfortunately, Garcia, Patric Gonzales, Charles Vergara, Glen Facun, and Mark Muir were booted out of the competition after succumbing to their opponents.
