Siren goes off as intensity IV earthquake felt in Muntinlupa
Muntinlupa residents were warned with a siren on Aug. 20 as a 5.1 earthquake struck Calaca, Batangas.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the magnitude 5.1 earthquake occurred at 12:43 a.m.
Immediately following the earthquake, the Muntinlupa City Department of Disaster Resilience and Management (MCDDRM) activated the early warning system or citywide siren to warn residents of the earthquake.
“Bilang tugon, nagpatunog ng public address system sa buong lungsod ang Pamahalaang Lungsod ng Muntinlupa sa pangunguna ng DDRM upang ipaalala sa lahat ang kahalagahan ng pagiging alerto at handa sa ganitong sitwasyon (In response, the Muntinlupa City Government, led by the DDRM, sounded the citywide public address system to remind everyone of the importance of being alert and prepared in this situation),” the MCDDRM posted on Facebook.
The MCDDRM said intensity IV earthquake was felt in Muntinlupa based on the reading on the Philippine Earthquake Intensity Meter Network (Peimnet)
Erwin Alfonso, MCDDRM head, said no damage was recorded in Muntinlupa.
Under Phivolcs' Earthquake Intensity Scale (PEIS), intensity IV is classified as a moderately strong earthaquake.
"Felt generally by people indoors and by some people outdoors. Light sleepers are awakened. Vibration is felt like a passing of heavy truck. Hanging objects swing considerably. Dinner, plates, glasses, windows and doors rattle. Floors and walls of wood framed buildings creak. Standing motor cars may rock slightly. Liquids in containers are slightly disturbed. Water in containers oscillate strongly. Rumbling sound may sometimes be heard," according to Phivolcs.

Intensity V - City of Calaca, Batangas
Intensity IV - Alitagtag, and Cuenca, Batangas; City of Tagaytay, Cavite
Intensity III- Quezon City; City of Santa Rosa, Laguna; Puerto Galera, Oriental Mindoro
Intensity II - City of Makati; City of Malabon, Hermosa, Bataan; Cainta, Rizal; City of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro
Intensity I - City of Biñan, City of Cabuyao, and City of San Pedro, Laguna; Baco, Oriental Mindoro
Instrumental Intensities:
Intensity IV - City of Muntinlupa; Cuenca, Lemery, and Santa Teresita, Batangas; Carmona, and City of Tagaytay, Cavite
