Although Palace Press Officer and Communications Undersecretary Claire Castro cannot confirm whether President Marcos and Santiago have talked over the latter's resignation, she confirmed that his irrevocable resignation is now for acceptance of the President.
"Hindi po naipaalam sa atin sa ngayon kung sila’y nagkausap pero ang irrevocable resignation ni NBI Director ay for acceptance (We have not yet been informed if they have already talked but the irrevocable resignation of the NBI Director is now for acceptance)," Castro said on Wednesday, Aug. 20.
The Palace official also said that the investigations conducted by the NBI, including their role in the probe on the missing sabungeros case, will not be hampered by Santiago's resignation.
"Marami pa rin naman pong mga tao pa rin po na may kredibilidad at maasahan at mapagkakatiwalaan, sila pa rin po ay patuloy na nagtatrabaho para dito (There are still many people who have credibility, who are dependable and trustworthy, and they continue to work for this)," Castro said.
In his statement, the resigned NBI chief said he will leave his post immediately upon the appointment of his replacement in order not to disrupt agency operations.
However, at present, Castro disclosed that there is still no information on Santiago's successor.
