Senator Mark Villar reaffirmed his commitment to championing modern public transport systems in the Philippines, underscoring the vital importance of the Light Rail Transit (LRT), the Metro Rail Transit (MRT), and the Metro Manila Subway in addressing traffic gridlock and improving the lives of millions of commuters.
“The LRT, MRT, and the Metro Manila Subway are not just infrastructure projects—they are lifelines for the Filipino people,” said Villar who chairs the Senate Committee on Public Works.
“Every day, our citizens endure the burdens of congestion and long travel hours. These rail systems are the answer to giving back time, energy, and dignity to the daily commute,” he added.
The former secretary of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) emphasized that the completion of the Metro Manila Subway, the country’s first underground railway, alongside continued improvements to both the LRT and MRT lines, represents a transformative step toward creating a reliable, affordable, and world-class transport system. The subway alone is expected to cut travel time across the capital and move hundreds of thousands of passengers daily, while the modernization of the existing elevated rail lines will bring immediate relief to long-suffering commuters.
Villar pledged to work closely with the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to guarantee the steady progress of these projects. He stressed that strong collaboration between the Senate and the executive branch is essential to overcoming bottlenecks, securing adequate funding, and ensuring accountability throughout the construction and operation phases.
“As Senator, I will make sure that these projects are carried out with efficiency and transparency. The public deserves to see real results—trains that run on time, systems that are safe and dependable, and services that truly put commuters first,” Villar said.
He also highlighted the broader benefits of expanding and strengthening the country’s rail system, noting that traffic congestion costs the economy billions in lost productivity each year. Reliable public transport, he explained, not only reduces travel time but also fuels growth by improving access to jobs, education, and business opportunities.
“The LRT, MRT, and subway aren’t just about convenience. They are about creating a fairer, stronger Philippines, where mobility is not a privilege but a right,” Villar added.
Villar concluded with a pledge of full support to DOTr and the Filipino people in ensuring the completion of these transport projects. “Together, we can deliver a future where commuting is no longer a daily struggle, but a seamless experience. These railways represent progress, hope, and opportunity. I am committed to seeing them through for the benefit of every Filipino family.”
