The untold stories of expats in Philippine History
Rotary Club of Manila Expats partners with The Ilustrado

The Rotary Club of Manila Expats, as part of its Global Insights virtual speaker series events, will host historian and storyteller Patrick Dureza on September 4, 2025, the creator of the acclaimed YouTube channel The Ilustrado.
The event, titled “Expat Footprints in Philippine History”, will explore the often overlooked and unique contributions of foreigners in shaping the Philippines’ national journey, from the time of Dr. José Rizal and the reformist era to today’s globally connected society.
“Expats have always been part of the Philippine story,” said Dureza. “By looking at their role in the past, we can better understand how today’s expat community can continue to make a positive impact on the country many now call home.”
This free, online event underscores the unique mission of the Rotary Club of Manila Expats, a newly established Rotary club whose aim is to connect international professionals in the Philippines with the broader community.
As explained by Maria Januszczak, Charter President of the Rotary Club of Manila Expats, district 3810, “Many expats have chosen to make the Philippines their home. Through our club, we want to move beyond simply living here. We want to contribute, connect, and leave a positive impact. Events such as this, where global perspectives meet local history, we hope to inspire our members and the wider community to be part of the Philippines’ continuing story.”
