PH, UAE mark 51 years of diplomatic ties

The Philippines and United Arab Emirates marked on Tuesday, Aug. 19, the 51st anniversary of their diplomatic relations that have spanned decades of friendship, cooperation, and shared progress.

In a statement, UAE Ambassador to Manila Mohamed Alqataam Alzaabi underscored how the two countries’ bilateral relations have strengthened their trade, development, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.

This would be more evident with the expected signing of the Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) between the two countries, which “will further boost trade and investment.”

“The UAE is home to more than one million Filipinos, whose contributions enrich every sector of society. The UAE remains committed to safeguarding their welfare and strengthening the bonds between the two nations,” the envoy said.

“As the UAE and the Philippines celebrate 51 years of enduring friendship, both countries reaffirm their commitment to advancing cooperation, fostering innovation, and promoting shared prosperity for generations to come,” he added.

Alzaabi also noted how in the past three years, the two countries have signed around 22 agreements that encompassed culture, energy transition, legal cooperation, government modernization, and security.

The two countries have also “reached a milestone” in their relations after President Marcos’ visit to the UAE in November 2024.

While there, he met with UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan and Vice President, Prime Minister, and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum.

Aside from these recent milestones, the ambassador also noted UAE’s $20 million commitment to rehabilitate the Pasig River and another $15 billion agreement between Masdar and the Philippines to develop renewable energy projects that can deliver up to 10 gigawatts of clean power by 2030.

To celebrate the anniversary, the National Museum of Fine Arts and José Rizal Monument in Luneta Park were bathed in the colors of the UAE flag.
