Filipino math aces secured top honors in the recently concluded 2025 Vietnam International Mathematics Competition (VIMC) held in Da Nang City, Vietnam, from Aug. 14 to 19.
Aside from seven individual contest medals and nine Merit citations, the Philippine “mathletes” also bagged several special awards, including Champion Team honors.
The 30-nation VIMC was hosted by the Vietnam- Korea University of Information and Communications Technology.

A total of 553 math-gifted students from the following countries joined host Vietnam in the event: USA, Russia, China, Canada, India, Taiwan, Singapore, Bulgaria, Nepal, South Africa, Indonesia, Malaysia, Tunisia, Thailand, Cyprus, Peru, Hong Kong, Mexico and Philippines, among others. The Vietnam and Singapore teams topped the tilt.
Dr. Simon Chua, head of Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG) which mentors the Philippine team, named the country's individual silver medalists as Annette Tiffany Yu and Robert Henrik Uy, both from St. John's Institute, and Shaun Lawrence Poh Leung of St. Stephen's High School.

On the other hand, the bronze medal winners are Heal Job Esio (Pangasinan Universal Institute), Jacob Trevor Kaw (Better Together Homeschool Int'l.), Kate Dominique Siaco (Ateneo de Manila SH) and Adrienne Geraldine Co (Immaculate Conception Academy).
The Merit awardees are Miguel Yee (St. John's Institute), Joaquin Edward Cardinal (Integrated Montessori Center), Kaylee Nichole Jimenez and Matthew Eldridge Uy (St. Jude Catholic School), Annika Louise Ong (Immaculate Conception Academy), Ethan Jude Saclamitao (Muntinlupa Science High School), Juan Alfredo Asperin (Phil. Science High School), Jaden Nathan Hernandez (St. Stephen's High School) and Ethan Gabriel Ngo (Hope Christian High School).

Meanwhile, Chua also reported that in the Group contest, Philippine Teams A and B were both named Champion Teams. Three other teams got first runner up honors while another one placed second runner up.
Team winners garnered trophies and medals while champion teams received trophies.
In June 2024, another team of Filipino math prodigies took home 22 medals, including 2 golds, from the Global Math Competition, also held in Vietnam.
The VIMC aims to "provide young math students with opportunities to interact in a friendly environment sharing both mathematical skills and cultural experiences, as well as exchanging best practices for improving math education."

MTG president Isidro Aguilar and math specialists Arvie Ubarro and Minerva Bianca Avecilla are the delegation's team leaders with Joel Edward Cardinal as deputy team leader.
The group is scheduled to fly back to Manila on Tuesday, Aug. 19.
