'Mga batang kamote': 12 minors nabbed for turning Bulacan bypass road into motorcycle exhibition, race track

Operatives of the Highway Patrol Group of the Philippine National Police (PNP-HPG) held 12 minors, aged seven to 16, for turning a bypass road in San Rafael town of Bulacan into a motorcycle race track.
PNP-HPG director Brig. Gen. William Segun said the operation conducted on Sunday, Aug. 17, at the Mabalas-Balas - Galas-Maasim Bypass Road also resulted in the arrest of 12 people.
“We impounded a total of 19 motorcycles as a result of the operation,” said Segun, adding that criminal charges are being prepared against the 12 adults. 
“This operation demonstrates the HPG’s firm resolve to protect lives by enforcing traffic laws and dismantling dangerous activities that put both riders and the public at risk. We remain committed to working with local units to ensure safer roads and communities,” he added.
PNP-HPG spokesperson Police Lt. Nadame Malang said the operation stemmed from a road crash on Aug. 3 wherein investigators found out that it was a result of an illegal motorcycle race along the bypass road.
“After that accident, we conducted validation and it was confirmed that illegal street racing was taking place in the area. Coordination was also made with the concerned barangay and this also confirmed it,” said Malang.
According to surveillance, the illegal street racing is usually held between 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. when numerous riders engage in illegal street racing and motorcycle exhibitions without wearing helmets.
Local police and HPG personnel conducted surprise patrols in the area and on Sunday, they chanced upon a group of motorcycle riders in the area.
Malang said the motorcycle riders sped off after seeing the policemen and while on their way to escape, one of them accidentally hit a minor. But the rider stood up and sped off to avoid the pursuing cops.
It was at the course of the investigation and coordination with the local officials that all those involved were identified and held.
