The Department of Tourism (DOT) on Tuesday, Aug. 19, assured the public of closer coordination with law enforcement agencies following the fatal shooting of two Japanese nationals in Manila, saying visitor safety remains a top priority.
In a statement, the DOT said it has been in constant contact with authorities to implement preventive measures and maintain confidence in the country’s destinations.
“Tourism, a vital pillar of livelihood for millions of Filipinos, heavily depends on creating and maintaining conditions of peace, safety, and security. Recent events have prompted advisories from foreign embassies, which could affect tourist confidence and the Philippines’ image as a safe and welcoming destination,” the statement read.
Authorities confirmed investigations are ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice, while the DOT stressed that the incident, though isolated, highlights the need for continued vigilance.
The department continues to coordinate with the Philippine National Police (PNP), the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG), and local government units to reinforce security measures.
It also works closely with regional offices and tourism stakeholders to reassure both domestic and foreign visitors.
The DOT emphasized that tourism development must be anchored on visitor safety and convenience, noting that “a safe environment is fundamental to sustaining the country’s growth as a globally competitive destination.
”It urged tourism stakeholders to report incidents immediately and ensure strict adherence to safety protocols across all establishments.
