The Diocesan Shrine and Parish of Our Lady of Aranzazu in San Mateo, Rizal, is set for a significant milestone as Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle will lead its solemn declaration as a national shrine on August 22, 2025.
This recognition underscores the shrine's importance in the country's Catholic heritage and its role as a beacon of devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
Cardinal Tagle, who has earlier been appointed by Pope Leo XIV as the new titular bishop of the Suburbican Diocese of Albano, one of the important dioceses in Rome, will be the main celebrant in the ceremony on Friday.
The Shrine of Our Lady of Aranzazu has been a revered site for pilgrims and devotees, attributed to numerous miracles and answered prayers through the intercession of the Virgin.
The Augustinian friars arrived in San Mateo in 1596 to spread the evangelization to the communities in the town but it was only during 1705 that the devotion to the San Mateo’s white-skinned Marian image with the child Jesus on her arm, was introduced by Jesuit priest, Padre Juan Echazabal.
The old church was built in 1715 and was dedicated to the Nuestra Señora de Aranzazu, a year later.
The Marian image’s feast day is every September 9.
The shrine office said, with the declaration as a national shrine, the San Mateo church will continue to serve as a symbol of hope and spiritual guidance for the faithful.
Church personnels said Cardinal Tagle's presence in the historic event on August 22, Friday, will undoubtedly add significance to the occasion, given the cardinal bishop’s influential role in the Catholic Church.
Others believe that Tagles’ leadership in the solemn declaration ceremony will be a testament to his dedication to the Catholic faith and his commitment to nurturing devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The solemn declaration ceremony on August 22 promises to be a momentous occasion, marking a new chapter in the shrine's history as huge crowd is expected to gather in and outside the shrine, to witness the momentous religious and historical event.
The revered Marian image was canonically crowned in 2017 during the time of Bishop Emeritus Francis de Leon.
The church was elevated to a diocesan shrine in 2004 during the time of then Bishop Gabriel V. Reyes
Other events happening in line with the shrine’s elevation of its status are the procession and motorcade in the streets of the municipality, and the exhibit of the replicas of the San Mateo’s Marian image at SM City San Mateo from August 20 to 31 and the concert of the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra entitled, “Symphonia Caeli” inside the shrine at 7 p.m. on August 29.
The Triduum Masses are held from August 19 to 21 as part of the preparation activities for the solemn declaration of the shrine.
