The Barangay Hall of Barangay 647, located along C. Palanca Street in Quiapo, was demolished following an order from the Manila City Government.
Personnel from the city government arrived in Quiapo, Manila to clear and haul away the dismantled structures following the demolition.
Along with the barangay hall, several informal structures and shanties in the area were also cleared.
The demolition operation started on Monday, August 18.
According to barangay officials, around 50 families, most of whom are informal settlers and Muslim residents, were affected by the demolition.
Many of the residents have been living in the area for over a decade now.
In 2007, under the administration of former Manila Mayor Alfredo Lim, the same community faced demolition and was reportedly promised relocation assistance.
However, the families said no relocation materialized forcing the families to return and rebuild on the site.
Police said the demolition operation is being conducted peacefully, with the cooperation of the residents and coordination between the Manila City Engineering Office and the barangay leadership.
Residents voluntarily packed up their belongings in response to the city’s directive.
Police teams were seen setting up barricades and securing the perimeter throughout the operation.
To ensure order and safety during the demolition, personnel from the Manila Police District (MPD) were deployed, particularly from Barbosa Police Station 14, with support from MPD SMaRT and the District Mobile Force Battalion (DMFB).
