The Manila Police District (MPD) announced on Monday, August 18, that one suspect has been arrested and a second person of interest identified in connection with the fatal shooting and robbery involving two Japanese nationals in Malate, Manila, on August 15.
In a press statement, the MPD said the Special Investigation Task Group MALVAR (SITG MALVAR) was activated to lead the probe, which has since made significant progress through extensive CCTV footage analysis and backtracking efforts.
Authorities did not disclose which of the two suspects had been apprehended. However, they provided information about both individuals based on surveillance footage and investigative findings.
The primary suspect, identified as the gunman, was reportedly seen frequenting areas along Pedro Gil Street.
Police said CCTV footage showed him removing his face mask, which enabled authorities to confirm his identity.
Meanwhile, a second person of interest, described as an alleged tour guide, was tracked via surveillance videos across several locations, including the Sheraton Hotel, Adriatico Street, and Pasay City.
Investigators, in coordination with hotel management, positively identified the individual through government-issued identification.
According to preliminary findings, the incident initially appeared to be a robbery, but investigators now believe the robbery was staged to mislead authorities.
Evidence points to a targeted killing as the likely motive.
“The timely resolution and relentless efforts dedicated to this case reflect our unwavering commitment to maintaining peace and order in Manila. We will continue to intensify our initiatives to safeguard our communities from all forms of criminality. Those who threaten the safety of the innocent can no longer find refuge in our city; justice will always prevail,” said MPD Director Gen. Arnold Thomas Ibay Abad.
The MPD and SITG MALVAR said they are coordinating closely with the Japanese Embassy and the victims’ families as the investigation progresses.
