The Palace cited the P100-million R.M. Tan Solar Pump Irrigation Project (SPIP) in Barangay R.M. Tan, Ormoc City which Marcos visited on Monday, Aug. 18.
During his inspection, Marcos said he was impressed to see how the facility works.
"We just came from yung Tzu Chi na village where nagtayo kami – nakapagtayo kami ng isang irrigation pumping station that is solar-powered that covers 100 hectares. So, ito yung ginagawa (this is what we are doing)–we have built over a hundred of those around the country already," he said.
"I just wanted to see how it work, maganda naman (it's good). We’re using the best of high-technology. May satellite imaging, mayroong AI na ginagamit. It’s really impressive kasi napakaganda sa ani (There is satellite imaging, it's using AI. It's really impressive because it is good for the harvest)," the President added.
It is the largest solar pump irrigation project of the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) in Eastern Visayas.
It is designed to irrigate 100 hectares of farmland for two cropping seasons each year, benefiting 92 farmers and their families.
Consisting of seven units of 10-horsepower capacity solar-powered pumps across two sites, the project is expected to increase harvests and improve the incomes of farming households in the area.
The completion of the R.M. Tan Solar Pump Irrigation Project (SPIP) will replace costly diesel pumps with solar-powered technology, providing farmers with a cheaper, cleaner, and more efficient source of irrigation.
According to Malacañang, the Ormoc SPIP is part of a nationwide initiative to build similar solar-powered irrigation systems. This effort aims to deliver long-term benefits to farmers and aligns with the country's renewable energy and sustainable development goals.
During his visit, Marcos was accompanied by NIA Administrator Eduardo Guillen, NIA Integrated Management Office for Biliran-Leyte del Norte-Leyte del Sur Manager Conrado Samson and personnel from the NIA Central Office and regional offices. Officers of the R.M. Tan Irrigators Association and farmer-beneficiaries were also present during Marcos' inspection.
