Prized cue artists Carlo Biado and Johann Chua lead the Filipino crew as they aim to bring the Philippines back on top when the 2025 US Open Pool 9-Ball Championship unfurls at Harrah’s Resort in Atlantic City starting Tuesday, Aug. 19 (Philippine time).
A total of 15 Filipinos are competing in the $500,000 week-long competition, which drew 256 players across the globe. The champion will take home $100,000 (around P5.7 million).
Only two Filipinos won the title in this annual event -- Biado in 2021 and Efren “Bata” Reyes in 1994. Fil-Canadian Alex Pagulan won in 2005 representing Canada.
Biado hopes to deliver the same firepower that won him his second World Pool Championship in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia as he goes up against Canada’s Jason Munro in his first match of the tournament.
Chua, for his part, also eyes to continue his winning ways after winning the Battle of the Bull event in Virginia over the weekend when he clashes with American Floro Ritarita.
Other Filipinos competing are Marvin Asis, Michael Baoanan, Lee Vann Corteza, Roland Garcia, Patric Gonzales, Bernie Regalario, Jefrey Roda, Harry Vergara, Roberto Gomez, Charles Vergara, Glen Facun, Baseth Mocaibat, and Mark Muir.
Hometown bet Fedor Gorst is out to defend his title along with a formidable field that include Spaniard Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, Albanian Eklent Kaci, Danish Mickey Krause, Taiwanese Ko Ping Chung and Singaporean Alyosius Yapp, to name a few.
