The second most wanted personality in Sulu was killed in a joint law enforcement operation by the Philippine Army (PA), Philippine National Police (PNP), and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) on Saturday, Aug. 16.
Alganer Dahim alias “Wangbu”, an alleged notorious lawless element involved in multiple crimes and listed as the Top 2 most wanted person in Sulu, sustained gunshot wounds to the body during a joint operation by the 41st Infantry Battalion, 11th Infantry Division (11ID); Maimbung Municipal Police Station, and PDEA in Barangay Kapok Punggol in Maimbung town.
The troops received intelligence information on the whereabouts of the suspect so they immediately coordinated with the PNP and PDEA to launch the operation. However, when the troops were about to arrest the suspect, they were met with gunfire.
A firefight ensued which lasted for a couple of minutes. The suspect even detonated a hand grenade which injured four Army soldiers.
When the exchange of bullets ended, troops found the lifeless body of Dahim.
According to the 11ID, Dahim was the prime suspect in the killing of Police Col. Julasirim Kasim, the director of Sulu Provincial Police Office, in 2009. He was also tagged in the killing of three members of a clan in Maimbung.
“He was also engaged in large-scale illegal drug operations in the municipalities of Parang, Indanan, and Maimbung, Sulu,” said Maj. Gen. Leonardo I. Peña, commander of 11ID and Joint Task Force Orion.
Troops recovered from the encounter site several magazines, ammunition, and war materiel.
Meanwhile, the four injured soldiers were brought to a hospital after sustaining wounds from grenade shrapnel.
“This operation demonstrates our unwavering commitment to uphold the rule of law. Our troops remain constantly vigilant, and we will not allow unlawful disturbances affecting the lives of the people of Sulu. There is no place for criminals and lawless elements to hide in Sulu, and justice will always catch up with those who sow violence, fear, and disorder in our communities,” Peña said.
He said the military continues to coordinate with the police and other law enforcement agencies to ensure lasting peace, security, and order in the province.
“We assure the people of Sulu that your Army will remain steadfast in protecting communities against those who disrupt peace,” Peña said.
