Brighter days await 100 members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) as they received new houses from the Office of the Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity (OPAPRU), a milestone in the government’s continuing peace and reintegration efforts in Mindanao.
In a statement Sunday, Aug. 17, the OPAPRU said the ceremonial turnover and inauguration ceremony in Mabuhay, Zamboanga Sibugay marked the completion of the housing units with a total project cost of over P40 million implemented under the OPAPRU’s PAyapa at MAsaganang PamayaNAn (PAMANA) Program and Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Modified Shelter Assistance Program (MSAP).
“Sa ating paglunsad ng proyektong pabahay na ito, ipinapakita natin ang ating pagkakaisa, pagtutulungan at higit sa lahat, ang ating pagnanais na bigyan ng isang maayos, matibay at komportableng tahanan ang ating mga kapatid na MNLF at kanilang mga mahal sa buhay (In launching this housing project, we are demonstrating our unity, cooperation, and most of all, our desire to provide our MNLF brothers and sisters and their loved ones with decent, sturdy, and comfortable homes),” OPAPRU Executive Director Cesar B. De Mesa said.
De Mesa said the modified shelters will not only serve as homes for the beneficiaries, but will also be a place where they can complete their transformation as peaceful and productive members of society.
Mabuhay Mayor Edreluisa O. Caloñge expressed gratitude to the national government for implementing the housing project in their municipality.
“Alagaan natin ang proyektong ito. Hindi lahat nagkakaroon ng pagkakataon na may ibinibigay na ganitong programa. Matagal na natin itong hinahangad (Let us take care of this project as not everyone is given the opportunity to benefit from a program like this. This is something we have long been hoping for,” Caloñge told the MNLF beneficiaries.
The housing project is one of the many collaborative peacebuilding and development initiatives being implemented by the OPAPRU in partnership with the DSWD as part of the MNLF Transformation Program.
The program aims to provide decent shelter and stable living conditions for former combatants as they transition to peaceful civilian life.
OPAPRU Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. said the initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to honor its peace agreements and to uplift the lives of those who once took up arms but have now chosen the path of peace.
