The Department of Transportation (DOTr) has ordered Light Rail Manila Corp. (LRMC) to compensate passengers who were injured following an escalator malfunction at FPJ Station of Light Rail Transit Line 1 (LRT-1).
In a statement, Transportation Secretary Vince Dizon reminded LRMC to uphold the reliability of LRT-1’s facilities to ensure the safety and welfare of commuters.
“Kabilin-bilinan ng Pangulo, na dapat kampante ang mga pasahero na ligtas ang biyahe nila kapag sasakay ng tren,” said Dizon.
(The President’s instruction is that passengers must be assured that their commute is safe when they ride the train.)
“Inutusan ko na ang LRMC na bigyan ng agarang tulong ‘yung mga nasaktang pasahero, at ayusin agad ‘yung nasirang escalator,” he added.
(I have ordered the LRMC to provide immediate assistance to the injured passengers and to promptly repair the broken escalator.)
According to the DOTr, one female passenger was brought to the hospital for check-ups and was discharged within two hours.
Six other passengers opted to go home after receiving first aid at the station.
The DOTr said that as of 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 16, the escalator has been repaired and cleared for public use.
The agency said it will continue working closely with LRMC to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.
