CEBU CITY – A mega project aimed at meeting the growing demand for meetings, incentives, conventions, and exhibitions (MICE) has started in Bohol province.
Gov. Aris Aumentado on Friday, Aug. 15, spearheaded the groundbreaking for the construction of the Bohol International Convention Center (BICC).
Joining Aumentado were Vice Gov. Nick Besas, Bohol first district Rep. Baba Yap, members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH)-Bohol First District Engineering Office OIC Engr. John Paul Gascon, Provincial Administrator Asteria Caberte, and stakeholders from the private sector.
The BICC will be the biggest convention center in the province with a seating capacity of 8,000.
“This will be a big boost for our tourism,” Aumentado said.
Situated near the Bohol-Panglao International Airport, the BICC will be a three-story multipurpose building with basement parking.
The proposed building has a total footprint area of 30,894.65-square meters, which includes basement parking (10,549.85-square meters), ground floor (11,786.21-square meters), the second floor (5,208.69-square meters), and the third floor (3,349.89-square meters).
The project has an initial budget of P350 million sourced from the General Appropriations Act of the DPWH.
The current biggest convention center in the province, the Hennan Resort Alona Beach in Panglao, only has a seating capacity of 1,000.
The DPWH-led project has a total contract price of P49.3 million for the initial construction phase with LABB Construction Development Inc. as contractor.
The lack of a huge convention center has deprived the province of being a potential venue for big national and international events that would require a big plenary hall.
“This will play a key role in our tourism industry as this can attract big events,” Aumentado added.
Aumentado said the province will look for ways to secure additional funding to ensure the completion of the BICC. He said the project would need almost P700 million in total funding.
The governor thanked officials who supported the project, including Sen. Imee Marcos, who, in 2022, allocated P50 million through DPWH to help fast-track the construction of the needed building.
Aumentado added that Yap has committed to secure funding for the concreting of the roads leading to the BICC.
