Former PBA star Alex Cabagnot is already 42 years old but make no mistake. He’s still sharp, agile and smart that he can still outplay his defenders 10 to 15 years younger than him.
Recalling the brilliance and resiliency he does routinely during his great years in the PBA, Cabagnot turned in a near triple-double performance in leading the Starhorse Basilan to a wire-to-wire 82-63 beating of Davao Occidental in the MPBL Season on Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Ynares Center Montalban in Rizal Province.
The wily guard produced 10 points, 10 rebounds, and nine assists to help the Portmasters snap a two-game skid and keep the team’s playoff bid alive with an even 11-11 record.
And he produced those numbers right on his first game after more than a month of absence due to a foot injury.
“Big comeback for our veteran guard,” said co-team owner Jackson Chua Jr. of the former San Miguel star who also tallied four steals.
Gab Dagangon led all Basilan scorers with 19 points and 8 rebounds and clinched best player honors.
Other Portmasters who delivered were Emman Calo with 13 points and two assists, and Reymar Caduyac with eight points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals.
In other games, the Pasay Voyagers denied the Rizal XentroMall Golden Coolers a field goal in the last two minutes and 40 seconds of the second overtime to prevail, 96-89.
Trailing 86-87, the Voyagers scored seven points while holding the Golden Coolers to two free throws en route to their 16th win against eight losses in the round-robin elimination phase of the 30-team tournament.
In the other game, the Bataan Risers bared their sharpest form yet and battered Manila Batang Quiapo, 144-82, to climb to 9-14.
