P885-M Iloilo fish port to boost food security

ILOILO CITY — President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. said the newly rehabilitated Iloilo Fish Port Complex (IFPC) in this city will benefit 1,500 fishermen and fish brokers.

“Mahalaga po ito dahil ang mga gagamit nito (This is important because of who can use this)," said Marcos during the inauguration on Wednesday, Aug. 13.

The opening of the IFPC is part of the countdown to the 50th anniversary of the Philippine Fisheries Development Authority (PFDA), an attached agency of the Department of Agriculture (DA).

PFDA General Manager Glen A. Pangapalan said the fish port will boost inclusivity and food security not only in Iloilo but also in Western Visayas region.

The P885-million project upgraded facilities, including cold storage, solar energy, and modernized market for fish brokers.

The market hall has 21 licensed fish brokers supported by 369 helpers and 503 fish viajeros with 344 helpers.

There are 66 major overland fish suppliers, seven fishing vessel operators, and 37 retailers assisted by 74 personnel, who are an essential part of the fish supply chain.

Also present during the inauguration were DA Secretary Francisco “Kiko” Tiu Laurel Jr., DA Undersecretary for Fisheries Drusila Esther E. Bayate, Iloilo Gov. Arthur “Toto” Defensor Jr., Uswag Ilonggo party-list Rep. James “Jojo” Ang Jr., Iloilo City Rep. Julienne “Jam Jam” Baronda, and Iloilo City Mayor Raisa Treñas-Chu.
