Marcos inspects unfinished P802-M flyover in Iloilo

ILOILO CITY – Aside from flood control projects, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. also inspected the unfinished flyover that cost around P802 million during his visit to Iloilo.

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) posted videos and photos of the convoy of Marcos passing along the Aganan Flyover in Pavia town on Wednesday, Aug. 13, on his way to neighboring Iloilo City.

The Aganan Flyover is one of the two controversial flyovers that were pet projects of former Ilonggo Sen. Franklin Drilon before he retired from politics.

The other is the Ungka Flyover, which connects Pavia town and neighboring Iloilo City. The Ungka Flyover was closed to vehicular traffic in September 2022 just months after opening when structural defects were found.

Both were constructed by International Builders Corp. (IBC) owned by relatives of USWAG Ilonggo party-list Rep. James “Jojo” Ang Jr.

An assessment by an independent firm discovered faulty design by the United Technology Consolidated Partnership (UTCP), which was hired by the Bureau of Design of the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

While the Ungka Flyover has since been reopened after repairs, heavy traffic along the two flyovers persists and has been a daily burden for the Ilonggos.

The Ilonggo public has called for accountability over the two flyovers, which roughly costs around P1.7 billion.

The Aganan Flyover was initially constructed for P560 million but ballooned to more than P802 million.

The Ungka Flyover’s initial cost was P680 million. It ballooned to almost P1 billion with repairs.
