Improvised stores near Smokey Mountain in Tondo demolished for safety
The Manila City government has ordered the demolition of improvised stores built beside the Smokey Mountain landfill due to the risk of a possible landslide from the mountain of garbage, especially after heavy rains.
The operation was led by the Department of Public Services (DPS), Manila Engineering Office, Manila Hawkers Division, and the Manila Police District (MPD).
Police from MPD Station 1 and SWAT teams were present to maintain peace and order during the demolition.
Police said that the store owners were asked to evacuate weeks before the demolition.
Mayor Francisco "Isko Moreno" Domagoso ordered the clearing to protect the residents, following the landslide that reportedly occurred in the area during the recent typhoon.
Vendors were given time to pack up their belongings and return to their homes at the nearby permanent housing complex.
Manila Hawkers Director Raffy Alejandro explained that the demolition is a first step to ensuring residents' safety.
He added that the city government and the barangay will work together to find a safer place where vendors can continue their livelihood.
The city government said that the demolition is part of Manila’s ongoing efforts to ensure safety and order in high-risk communities like Smokey Mountain.
