FFCCCII backs Ramon Ang's offer to help solve Metro Manila flooding
The Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry Inc. (FFCCCII) welcomed tycoon Ramon Ang’s offer to help address Metro Manila’s enduring flood problem, describing the initiative as a “remarkable act of corporate philanthropy.”
“We fundamentally endorse such visionary private sector initiatives that directly address critical national challenges,” said FFCCCII in a statement penned by its president Victor Lim.
“This proposal arrives at a pivotal moment, promising not merely infrastructure intervention, but a transformative commitment to safeguarding our capital's communities, securing livelihoods, and fortifying the region's economic vitality,” he added.
Ang, chairman and CEO of diversified conglomerate San Miguel Corp. (SMC), offered to help address flooding in the capital region at “no cost to the government.”
Ang made this statement after some of SMC’s projects were accused of causing floods in certain parts of Metro Manila.
He said his company is ready to dredge rivers and unclog drains, as long as authorized by the government to do so.
FFCCCII, which comprises over 170 business and trade associations, said it is confident of Ang’s capacity to deliver on this monumental undertaking
“His stewardship of the San Miguel Skyway project stands as a towering testament to his ability to conceive and execute complex infrastructure endeavors that reshape metropolitan landscapes,” the group said.
“Beyond concrete and steel, Mr. Ang possesses an entrepreneurial genius characterized by pragmatic creativity—an ability to navigate challenges and deliver results where others see obstacles,” it added.
FFCCCII said Ang’s capability is apparent in SMC’s “highly impactful reforms” of the country’s main gateway, Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA).
The business group said the airport’s swift transformation to become more efficient underscores the tycoon’s aptitude for identifying systemic inefficiencies and implementing decisive solutions.
“His proven track record in delivering massive infrastructure projects provides a compelling foundation for trust,” it said.
Once Ang’s pledge is realized, FFCCCII said it has the potential to unlock significant economic benefits for the country, noting that it will significantly reduce costs incurred from flooding.
On the part of the group, it noted that is likewise active in driving tangible social progress for the country through its flagship "Operation Barrio Schools" program.
The program, which started in the 1960s, has constructed and donated over 6,500 rural public school buildings nationwide.
“We are confident that this convergence of engineering brilliance, entrepreneurial acumen, and deep commitment to the Philippines will forge a safer, drier, and more prosperous future for our nation,” said FFCCCII.
