Home to a diverse population, Manila appeals to international and Filipino families seeking globally oriented learning opportunities for their children. In an increasingly dynamic world, many seek a vibrant, diverse learning environment that equips children with global competence.
Countries across the world embrace international schools that offer exceptional academic programmes. These premier schools welcome students from diverse backgrounds, celebrate cultural diversity, and deliver the highest quality education to every learner. They provide a holistic global education that transcends national boundaries, preparing students to navigate the dynamic challenges of our interconnected world.
The British School Manila, established in 1976, offers a British international education designed to equip students with the skills, knowledge and values necessary to be effective global citizens. It is also the oldest and only non-profit international school in Manila, providing a British curriculum from primary to senior high school. The school focuses on creating a nurturing, family-like environment and strives to equip students with the skills, knowledge, and values to make a positive difference in the world.
The institution congratulates Mark Attwood as he steps into the role of head of Senior School commencing this academic year. As he begins this new chapter in leadership, he brings a wealth of experience, a proven track record of excellence, and a commitment to creating an environment where both students and staff can thrive. He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Liverpool, gained his teaching qualification from the University of Keele in 1999, and in 2022 completed the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH), the United Kingdom’s benchmark credential for school leadership.
His educational philosophy aligns with the school’s spirit, as shown in his goal to lead collaboratively and foster an environment that embodies the core values of kindness, respect, and integrity. By investing in the growth of both students and staff, he aims to secure strong academic outcomes and global university placements, while equipping learners with the resilience, adaptability, and critical thinking skills needed to thrive in an increasingly complex and unpredictable future.
The British School Manila not only fosters a vibrant community but also hones students to become future leaders and changemakers. Its students have a strong record of high academic achievement, placing in the top 100 schools in the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP), outperforming most UK schools as well as international schools in the Philippines and across Asia. All students generally sit for IGCSEs, GCSEs, and the IBDP. They participate in community service projects and fundraising events supporting partner charities and actively engage with the wider community.
Recently, they achieved an IB Diploma Programme average of 37 points, significantly above the anticipated world average of 31, and they are anticipating a ranking among the top 50 IB schools globally in September.
“This remarkable achievement is a testament to the students’ sense of belonging, curiosity, and trust in the high-quality learning and teaching they experience at BSM from our incredibly strong teaching body,” Mark stated.
At BSM, education goes beyond academics—students are prepared for the rigors of higher learning while being equipped with the values, knowledge, and skills to make a positive impact as global citizens.
