DAVAO CITY – More than 1,000 Indigenous Peoples (IPs) here benefited from a medical mission led by first district Rep. Paolo Duterte, second district Rep. Omar Duterte, and acting Vice Mayor Rodrigo Duterte II on Thursday, Aug. 14, at Magsaysay Park.
The event dubbed “Pulong-Pulong ni Pulong Medical Mission” was organized in celebration of the 40th Kadayawan Festival and deliver essential health services to underserved communities, Vice Mayor Duterte said.
Offices of the three Dutertes provided people with free general and eye checkups, medicines, food packs, and packed lunches. They also served hot porridge to outpatients, many of who came from far-flung barangays.
Eight volunteer doctors joined the mission — six for general consultations and two for eye examinations — representing PMC-PC Panabo, Tagum Medical City, Adela-Sierra Ty Memorial Medical Center, Davao del Sur Provincial Hospital, Mindanao Medical Foundation College, Davao de Oro Provincial Hospital, and Malta Medical Center.
Beneficiaries thanked the Dutertes for the initiative.
Geraldine Galaw, 44, of Barangay Maa, said she has been experiencing vision problems and appreciated the opportunity to consult an eye specialist free of charge.
Fhebelyn A. Mohamad, 50, a member of the Kagan tribe from Barangay Waan, sought treatment for hypertension and an eye ailment. She said such programs are “a big help to the community in general.”
“Many of us tend to put off medical checkups. We must show up now that it’s ready and free,” Mohamad added.
Haber Jabbil, 67, of Bangkal, a member of the Tausog tribe, said the mission allowed him to have eye and general examinations without the financial burden of hospital visits.
Rep. Paolo said the initiative is part of ongoing outreach efforts during the Kadayawan Festival.
Vice Mayor Duterte said that the program was designed to ensure Lumad communities have “quick and easy access to medical care.”
The Dutertes thanked volunteer doctors, nurses, and support staff for their commitment. “Their selfless contribution has made this mission a success,” Rep. Paolo said.
Vice Mayor Duterte announced plans to visit indigenous communities in the city’s hinterlands in the coming weeks to extend further assistance.
