New hope: Doctors join Cainta mayor's effort to help cancer patients and support maternal care

Two doctors have joined local health initiatives in response to Cainta Mayor Keith Nieto’s call for specialists to provide medical care for children with cancer and support maternal health services for women in the municipality.
Nieto expressed gratitude to Dr. May Priscilla Cero, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist, who responded to his call to help the parents of children battling cancer and showed willingness to serve the community.
The mayor said some parents had approached him for help for their children, including cases of leukemia and lymphoma.
He said they initially tried to support the children at private hospitals, but their assistance was not enough due to the high cost of treatment.
“Pinilit kong suportahan ang mga kelangan nila sa mga pribadong ospital, pero mabigat talaga… malaking pondo lagi ang katapat (We tried to assist with their treatment at private hospitals, but the financial burden was always heavy),” he explained.
It prompted him to instruct Cainta Municipal Hospital administrator Dr. Antonio Jayson Sierra to find an oncologist-hematologist from private hospitals who could serve as a consultant for the LGU-run facility.
On Monday, Aug. 11, Dr. Cero arrived at Nieto’s office and quickly agreed to serve as a consultant at the local government hospital.
“Ngayong umaga, sa dasal na rin marahil ng mga umaasang magulang, dumating si Dr. May Priscilla Cero sa buhay ng mga taga Cainta… isa siyang pediatric hematologist oncologist… (This morning, answering the hopes and prayers of concerned parents, Dr. May Priscilla Cero, a pediatric hematologist-oncologist, arrived to serve the residents of Cainta),” he said.
“Kabado pa ko nung una baka di pumayag… pero walang dalawang minuto pagkatapos ko ipahayag ang aking pakay, napapirma ko siyang magtrabaho sa atin… (I was initially nervous she might decline, but less than two minutes after I explained my purpose, she agreed to work with us),” he added.
The mayor said that Dr. Cero will hold consultations at the hospital every Saturday.
“Di mo alam doc kung anong biyaya ang dinala mo sa bayan ko para matulungan ang mga batang may cancer… sobrang salamat sayo at maligayang pagdating sa Cainta (Doc, you cannot imagine the blessing you bring to our town by helping children with cancer. We are very grateful and welcome you to Cainta),” he expressed.
Birthing clinic
Meanwhile, last July 29, Nieto announced that Dr. Ivy Bernardo, an obstetrician-gynecologist, responded to his call to manage the birthing clinic of the newly opened Karangalan Super Health Center, which will operate 24 hours.
“Hindi na kailangang pumila pa sa ospital natin… May Ob-gyne doctor na ang Karangalan health center. Super ang tawag sa kanya kasi 24 hours a day ang operation dito (There’s no need to line up at our hospital anymore… the Karangalan Health Center now has an OB-GYN doctor. It’s called a ‘Super Health Center’ because it operates 24 hours a day),” he said.
The health center offers laboratory and diagnostic services, a birthing clinic, and selected surgical procedures to help ease the patient load at the city hospital.
