BACOLOD CITY – Negros Oriental Gov. Manuel “Chaco” Sagarbarria was elected chairman of the Regional Development Council (RDC) in the newly-established Negros Island Region (NIR).

Christina Marie Gaston of the Association of Negros Producers based in Negros Occidental was elected co-chairperson.
Sagarbarria was elected during the RDC-NIR full council and sector committee organizational meeting led by the Department of Economy, Planning, and Development (DEPDev) at the Plenary Hall of the Negros Oriental Convention Center in Dumaguete City on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
The meeting was attended by officials and stakeholders from the provinces of Negros Occidental, Negros Oriental, and Siquijor, which comprise NIR.
Negros Occidental Gov. Eugenio Jose Lacson, who was appointed chairperson of the Regional Peace and Order Council (RPOC)-NIR last April, was appointed chairperson of the Economic Development Committee, with Gaston as co-chairperson.
Lailyn Ortiz, director of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), is the chairperson of the development administration committee, while Carmenia Benosa of Little Children of the Philippines Foundation Inc., is co-chairperson.
Dumaguete City Mayor Manuel “Chiquiting” Sagarbarria and Edward Du of the Negros Oriental Chamber of Commerce and Industry were elected chairperson and co-chairperson, respectively, for the infrastructure development committee.
Canlaon City, Negros Oriental Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas nd Profetiza Lim of the Negros Oriental Union of Cooperatives were elected chairperson, and co-chairperson of the social development committee.
Siquijor Gov. Jake Vincent Villa attended the meeting. Mayor Greg Gasataya of this highly-urbanized city was not able to attend due to prior commitments.
Gasataya welcomed the creation of the RDC-NIR. “This is the first time that a new region will have its RDC,” he added.
He backed RDC-NIR leaders. “We will help but to have additional functions with RDC, I would rather give it to those who have time,” said Gasataya who said that he is focused on Bacolod for now.
Bacolod Rep. Albee Benitez was installed chairperson of the RDC in Western Visayas when he was mayor in 2022 and this city was been part of Region 6 or Western Visayas.
The RDC-NIR meeting discussed the establishment of regional offices and other development agenda in the region.
