The Philippine Air Force (PAF) received five brand-new S-70i Black Hawk helicopters which are expected to further enhance the country’s air mobility, disaster response, and security operations.
PAF Commanding General, Lt. Gen. Arthur Cordura led the acceptance, turnover, and blessing ceremony of the Black Hawks at Clark Air Base in Mabalacat City, Pampanga on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
“With this latest addition, the PAF further strengthens its capacity to conduct humanitarian assistance and disaster response operations, troop and cargo transport, and other missions critical to national security and development,” PAF spokesperson Col. Ma Consuelo Castillo said.
The Black Hawks arrived in the country on July 15. They form part of the 32 Black Hawk units procured by the PAF from Polish aircraft maker PZL Mielec, a subsidiary of American defense and aerospace giant Lockheed Martin. The P32-billion deal, signed in February 2022, is included in the second horizon of the Armed Forces of the Philippines’ (AFP) revised modernization program.
The initial batch of five helicopters arrived in June 2024 while another five were delivered in December that year. This year, 15 units are scheduled for delivery, including the latest batch, while the final seven are set to arrive in 2026.
With the delivery, the PAF now operates 30 Black Hawks. The PAF also bought 16 Black Hawks from 2019 to 2021, but one of the choppers crashed in Capas, Tarlac in June 2021.
The Black Hawks will eventually replace the aging UH-1 Huey helicopters of the PAF.
Castillo said the fresh batch of Black Hawks underwent a stringent Technical Inspection and Acceptance (TIA) process conducted by the Department of National Defense (DND), AFP, and PAF “to ensure compliance with operational standards and specifications.”
The new Black Hawks will be operated and maintained by the 205th Tactical Helicopter Wing under the Air Mobility Command.
The S-70i Black Hawk helicopters are known for their versatility, speed, and reliability in a wide range of missions.
Aside from troop transport, aerial reconnaissance, and humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations, Black Hawks were also used in military operations such as responding to emergencies.
Just last week, the PAF deployed a Black Hawk to perform heli-bucket operations and assist in extinguishing a huge fire that struck a residential area in Tondo, Manila.
