Deputy Speaker Antipolo City 1st district Rep. Ronaldo "Ronnie" Puno agrees with Vice President Sara Duterte's dare of sorts for House of Representatives members to reveal their travel records.
This, after the Vice President--who had been crticized by certain House members for her constant travels abroad--tried to turn the tables on accusers.
"Agree ako. Lahat tayo maglabasan tayo ng travel [records] (I agree. Let's bring out all our travel records)," Puno said in a press conference Tuesday, Aug. 12 after getting wind of the lady official's remarks.
"May dalawang klaseng travel, ha. Official travel at personal travel. Yung personal travel, hindi binabayaran ng gobyerno. Official travel, binabayaran ng gobyerno. Personal travel, nandyan sa leave mo. Di ba? Sa personal na oras mo," Puno explained.
(There are two kinds of travel. Official travel and personal travel. Personal travel isn’t paid for by the government. Official travel is paid for by the government. Personal travel is charged to your leave, right? It’s on your personal time.)
"Kasi syempre lahat tayo, may katungkulan tayong may oras na nandyan sa opisina. May official, may personal travel. Labas natin official travel, labas Kung gusto nila pati personal, ako payag ako. Pero...Wala naman siguro yung natatakot yan. Dito sa Congress. Dito naman lahat nakikita niyo," he confidently said.
(Because of course, all of us have responsibilities that require us to be in the office during certain hours. There’s official and personal travel. Let’s disclose official travel. If they want to include personal travel too, I’m fine with that. But… I don’t think anyone’s afraid of that. Here in Congress. Everything is visible here anyway.)
Punp said that once the solons' official travel records are out, these should then be compared to their "actual travel".
He said he would personally sign a formal document to facilitate such cross-checking.
"Kasi kung yung official travel, ito lang, ang personal travel mo, ganun kalaki, eh, ginawa mo ba yan on your own time? Or, yung sa oras na binabayaran ka ng sweldo? Di ba? Gawa lang natin ng porma, papirmahin natin at ako mauna ako," the deputy speaker said.
(Because if your official travel is just this much, and your personal travel is that extensive, then did you do that on your own time? Or during the hours when you’re being paid a salary? Right? Let’s just create a form, have people sign it, and I’ll be the first to do so.)
Since March, the Vice President has been going back and forth to the The Hague, in the Netherlands to visit her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte. The elder Duterte is being held and tried at the International Criminal Court (ICC) for a charge of crimes against humanity.
At the height of the public discourse on the impeachment case, the Vice President seemed to frequent engagements and events abroad involving her supporters from the local Filipino community there.
