DOH-Bicol warns vs lung fluke disease, urges public to avoid consuming raw crabs, crayfish

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay — The Department of Health (DOH)-Bicol has cautioned the public against Paragonimiasis, also known as lung fluke disease, and urged residents to avoid eating raw or undercooked crabs, crayfish, and shellfish.
In a press conference Monday, DOH-Bicol medical officer Dr. Xavier Vallejo described the illness as a neglected tropical disease often mistaken for tuberculosis due to its similar symptoms.
Paragonimiasis is caused by a parasitic flatworm that usually infects the lungs but may spread to the skin, brain, and other organs if left untreated.
The parasite is primarily transmitted through the consumption of raw or undercooked crabs and crayfish carrying its larvae.
Eating raw or marinated shellfish also poses a significant risk.
“People often confuse it with TB, which delays proper treatment. Early diagnosis is crucial,” Vallejo stressed.
Data from the TB-Paragonimiasis Program revealed that of 36 patients tested across the region in July , 27 were confirmed positive for the disease.
Health officials strongly advised the public to avoid consuming raw freshwater crustaceans and seek immediate medical consultation if they experience persistent cough, chest pain, or other related symptoms.
