The Manila Health Department has activated a special ward at Sta. Ana Hospital, which is dedicated solely for leptospirosis cases, amid growing concern over the rising number of fatalities and severe infections across the city.
Manila Health Department chief Dr. Grace Padilla announced the move on Monday, Aug. 11, citing alarming data: 18 deaths have already been recorded due to leptospirosis, while numerous others remain hospitalized, many in serious condition, with some patients already undergoing dialysis.
Dr. Padilla raised concern over the tendency of patients to seek treatment only during the late stages of the disease.
She advised the public to avoid wading in floodwaters.
The local health department also urged those who are exposed to seek immediate assistance at the city’s health centers, where they can be given free prophylaxis to prevent infection.
The health chief emphasized the importance of taking prophylactic treatment, especially for individuals with open wounds on their feet, who are at greater risk of contracting the bacteria.
Meanwhile, the Ospital ng Maynila (OM) has announced that its emergency room is now operating beyond capacity, with a total of 140 leptospirosis cases admitted so far.
Due to limited bed availability, Dr. Padilla requested public understanding and advised that patients may opt to be transferred to other hospitals in the city.
Referrals may be secured through the OM for proper coordination and transfer.
