Severe tropical storm Gorio enters PAR — PAGASA

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) on Monday, Aug. 11 said the severe tropical storm with the international name “Podul” has entered the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) and has been given the local name “Gorio.”
As of 4 a.m., Gorio was located 1,305 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon, moving westward at 25 kilometers per hour (kph).
It has maximum sustained winds of 110 kph near the center and gusts of up to 135 kph.
PAGASA said it may intensify into a typhoon within the next 12 hours, then gradually weaken as it continues to move northwestward.
The weather bureau pointed out that Gorio is not expected to directly affect any part of the country within the next three days.
However, it is not ruling out the possibility of raising Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over extreme Northern Luzon should Gorio shift further south.
Based on its current forecast, Gorio may make landfall over the northeastern coast of Taiwan on Wednesday, Aug. 13, and exit the PAR by Wednesday evening or Thursday early morning, Aug. 14.
Gorio unlikely to enhance ‘habagat’
PAGASA weather specialist Daniel James Villamil said the storm is not expected to enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat.”
Most parts of the country can still expect fair weather until Tuesday, though isolated rain showers or thunderstorms may occur in the afternoon or evening.
By Wednesday, cloudy skies with scattered monsoon rain showers and thunderstorms are expected to affect Visayas, Palawan, and western Mindanao.
From Thursday to Friday, Aug. 15, similar weather conditions are expected to prevail over Visayas, most of Southern Luzon, western Mindanao, and extreme Northern Luzon.
However, PAGASA warned that Gorio may cause moderate seas, with wave heights of 1 to 1.5 meters, over the coastal waters of extreme Northern Luzon.
Mariners of motor bancas and similar small vessels are advised to take precautionary measures when venturing out to sea and, if possible, avoid navigating under these conditions, especially if inexperienced or operating ill-equipped boats.
