Rising star Justine Jazareno made heads turn after capturing the Best Libero plum in the 5th SEA V.League Leg 2 that concluded over the weekend in Vietnam.
The 25-year-old Jazareno, a former De La Salle Lady Spiker, displayed versatility on the floor to help Alas Pilipinas cop its fourth consecutive bronze medal in the past two editions of the annual regional tournament.
Her performance made her the third Filipina to win the Libero honor next to the first-ever recipient of the said plum in Dawn Catindig (2019) and Kyla Atienza (2022).
She also became the second Filipina to bag an individual award in this year’s edition after Angel Canino took home the Best Outside Spiker plum in the first leg.
It was another reason to celebrate after Alas Pilipinas snared the bronze medal following a 25-17, 25-17, 28-26 sweep of Indonesia last Sunday, Aug. 10.
However, it also came at a bittersweet moment as well for the FIlipina hitters as Alyssa Solomon hurt her left knee in the first set of that match where she stretchered out off the court. No further developments are available at the moment regarding her injury.
The PH team closed out its run with a 1-2 slate at third place in both legs where its wins were at the expense of the Indonesians. It had also shown great resistance against Leg 1 titlist Thailand and Leg 2 eventual champion and host Vietnam by taking a set against the regional powerhouse teams.
And those outings showed it could have a good potential for the PH crew to break its podium drought in the Southeast Asian Games slated this December.
