The Philippine women’s national football team lost its footing after stumbling to Australia U23, 1-0, to absorb its first defeat in the 2025 ASEAN MSIG Serenity Cup at the Viet Tri Stadium in Phu Tho, Vietnam Sunday, Aug. 10.
Following their 7-0 demolition of Timor Leste, the Filipinas eyed to reassert their dominance but failed as forward Alana Jancevski delivered the lone goal of the match off a left-foot shot from the box’s right side to bottom’s left corner within the injury time of the first half.
Hali Long and Alessandrea Carpio tried to rescue the Nationals, but Aussie goalkeeper Chloe Lincon denied their attempts, resulting in the team falling to second spot with a 1-1 record with Australia in Group B.
Despite its loss, the reigning champion PH crew still has a shot for a title as it holds a +6 goal difference and it could be bolstered more when it tackles current top seed Myanmar (2-0) this Wednesday, Aug. 13.
A win over the Myanmar squad, which previously notched a 2-1 victory against Australia, could propel the Nationals to the semifinal.
Both the Filipinas and Australia bucked slow starts until Jancevski had her first opportunity to strike for the Aussies in the 21st minute. But PH veteran goalie Olivia McDaniel was there to the rescue.
McDaniel was able to spoil Australia's assault in the following minutes, keeping the match nil-nil and after extra minutes given, Jancevski took the chance and posted a goal with 45-minute, 43-second time had passed heading into the break.
The Nationals looked for ways to equalize or to regain the lead and it plans didn’t go to its way as Australia managed to strengthen its defensive end, outshining the Filipinas in many aspects of the game.
