Renowned Filipina geneticist and National Scientist Carmencita D. Padilla, a pioneering leader in genetics and genomics in the Philippines, has been elected Co-Chair for Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs) of the InterAcademy Partnership (IAP) Governing Board, the global network’s highest decision-making body.
Padilla, nominated by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL), was chosen through a vote by IAP member academies worldwide.
Her three-year term will officially begin on December 11, 2025, during the IAP Triennial General Assembly and Conference in Cairo, Egypt.
The InterAcademy Partnership is a worldwide network of over 150 academies of science, engineering, and medicine that provides independent, evidence-based advice on urgent global issues such as public health, climate change, and sustainable development.
NAST PHL said it actively represents the Philippines in strengthening international science collaboration.
“A pioneer in genetics and genomics in the Philippines, National Scientist Padilla has led major initiatives in newborn screening, rare disease advocacy, and genomic medicine,” NAST PHL said in a statement.
“Her appointment reinforces the role of LMICs in shaping international science policy and ensuring equitable access to scientific innovations,” it added.
NAST PHL emphasized that Padilla’s appointment highlights the importance of LMIC representation in global science governance, ensuring inclusive and equitable access to innovations.
Her leadership, it added, strengthens the Philippines’ position in advancing impactful and collaborative science engagement worldwide.
NAST PHL is an agency attached to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), mandated to honor outstanding scientific achievements and advise the Philippine government on science and technology policy matters.
