The Department of National Defense (DND) on Monday, Aug. 11, condemned China’s reckless maneuvers in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) that resulted in the collision of its two vessels while chasing a Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) ship.
In a statement, the DND backed the PCG and called out China’s “atrocious and inane” conduct in Bajo de Masinloc (Scarborough or Panatag Shoal).
“The DND stands in solidarity with the Philippine Coast Guard in the face of Chinese atrocious and inane behavior in the West Philippine Sea. Hindi tayo pasisiil (We shall never be oppressed),” the short statement read.
DND Secretary Gilberto Teodoro Jr. stressed that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has made the Philippine stand in the WPS crystal clear, that "we do not want war or seek confrontation but we must do what we need to do in order to protect our sovereignty and sovereign rights, calls of any sector to the contrary notwithstanding."
"This is not aggression but simply the sacred duty of all Filipinos. We do not control what external actors may think or may do but we must deter them from making choices that violate Philippine interests," he added.
This came after China Coast Guard (CCG) ship with bow number “3104” collided with a Chinese People’s Liberation Army-Navy (PLA-N) warship with tail number “164” while they were chasing PCG vessel BRP Suluan at high speed approximately 10.5 nautical miles east of Bajo de Masinloc.
The incident occurred while the PCG was handing out fuel and supplies to fishermen in Bajo de Masinloc, a shoal located 124 nautical miles east of Zambales but tightly guarded by Chinese forces.
The PCG said the collision caused substantial damage to the CCG vessel’s forecastle, rendering it unseaworthy.
It added that BRP Suluan was also targeted by water cannon by the Chinese forces. Still, the crew of BRP Suluan immediately offered support to the CCG vessel, including assistance with man-overboard recovery and medical aid for any injured CCG crew members.
Collisions between Philippine and Chinese vessels in the WPS have occurred in the past but it was the first time that the PCG recorded two Chinese vessels crashing into each other while running after Philippine vessels in the disputed waters.
