Akbayan Party-list Rep. Chel Diokno hailed on Monday, Aug. 11 the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) for their admirable gesture of helping crew members of China Coast Guard (CCG) vessels that collided with each other in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
This, after the foreign ships tried--and failed--to chase after a PCG ship off Scarborough (Panatag) Shoal.
"Nagbibigay pugay din tayo sa miyembro ng [PCG] na hindi nagdalawang isip na magbigay ng agarang tulong sa crew ng nagbanggaang barko ng [CCG] sa kabila ng insidente (We pay tribute to the member of the PCG who did not hesitate to provide immediate assistance to the crew of the vessel that collided with the CCG, despite the incident)," Diokno said in statement.
This notwithstanding, the seriousness of the CCG's infraction wasn't lost on Diokno and fellow "WPS bloc" member Mamamayang Liberal (ML) Party-list Rep. Leila de Lima.
"Mariin nating kinokondena ang panggigipit ng China sa 'Kadiwa' mission para sa mga mangingisda sa [WPS] (We strongly condemn China's harassment of the 'Kadiwa' mission for fishermen in the WPS)," Diokno said.
"Ang Scarborough Shoal ay parte ng ating karagatan at walang karapatan ang China na manghimasok at pigilan ang ating paglalayag sa ating teritoryo. Nananawagan din tayo sa gobyerno na gawin ang karampatang aksyon ukol sa pagkilos na ito ng China," added the rookie solon.
(Scarborough Shoal is part of our waters, and China has no right to interfere or prevent our navigation within our own territory. We also call on the government to take appropriate action regarding this move by China.)
Outrageous!
De Lima, also a neophyte in the 20th Congress, echoed the Akbayan solon's condemnation of the CCG's action.
"We strongly condemn the recent harassment by the Chinese vessels against our Philippine vessels during a mission to aid Filipino fishermen in Bajo de Masinloc in the West Philippine Sea. Outrageous!" she said in a separate statement.
£Amid these never-ending aggressions and incursions of China, wherein our fishermen and soldiers are being blocked, harassed and intimidated, we call on the government to further strengthen its resolve and defense of our national sovereignty and territorial integrity," added De Lima, a former senator.
