Filipino math aces earned top honors anew in two international mathematics competitions, both held last week in Hong Kong.
The Philippine team, represented by math-gifted students of Zamboanga Chong Hua High School (ZCHHS) in Zamboanga City, brought home 10 medals and five merit awards from the twin contests.
At the 2025 International Mathematics Invitational Hope Cup Peak Challenge, held on August 6 and 7 at the Hong Kong Convention Center, the ZCHHS mathletes bagged one gold, four silver, and one bronze medals.
More than 400 students took part in the 10-nation tilt: Brazil, Canada, China, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Macau, the Philippines, and host Hong Kong.
Dr. Simon Chua, head of Mathematics Trainers' Guild Phils. (MTG), which mentors the team, named Vincent Benito Chan the group's lone gold medalist. Chan also got a silver medal in the Team Awards.
David Gabriel Reaport won two silver medals, while Dylan Mattews Lim garnered a silver and a bronze medal.
Earlier, the same team secured two silver and two bronze medals plus five Merit citations in the 2025 Hua Luo Geng International Gold Cup Math Invitational Tournament, held on August 4 and 5 at the HK Asia TV Station Auditorium and the East Kowloon Kai Tak Auditorium.
Team member Jerome Rance Ejedio took home a bronze medal and a Merit certificate.
A total of 624 students competed in the event, which drew teams from 23 Chinese provinces and five autonomous regions plus delegations from Taiwan, Thailand, Macau, Malaysia, the Philippines, and host Hong Kong.
China's Hunan province and Shanghai City topped the event, which honored the late Chinese mathematician Hua Luo Geng, famous for his contributions to the "numbers theory" and for promoting math research and education in the communist state.
His work on math optimization and operational research reportedly made a great impact on the Chinese economy.
Hua Luo Geng, who was born in 1910 in Changzhou City in Jiangsu province and died in 1985 in Japan, is also a former member of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China.
The "Hua Cup" aims to identify potential math aces and provide them with opportunities to develop their math problem-solving and collaboration skills.
It also hopes to provide a platform for students to represent their respective countries in future international math contests.
MTG officer Harry Uy and coach Jomar Ejedio headed the Philippine delegation.
