A landing craft tank carrying 13 Filipino crew members ran aground and listed heavily to port after being battered by huge waves off Siruma, Camarines Sur, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) disclosed Sunday, Aug. 10.
Based on the initial investigation, LCT Phoenix hit shallow waters off San Miguel Bay in Brgy. Matandang Siruma last Aug. 7.
Personnel of the Coast Guard Station Camarines Sur immediately conducted a search and rescue operation after receiving a call about the incident.
The responding coast guard personnel saw that the ship has already tilted on its side due to strong current. Fortunately, all crew members were rescued and accounted for.
“The incident transpired due to strong winds and currents in vicinity,” the PCG said.
The PCG said the vessel was carrying construction materials when the incident took place.
No oil spill was detected in the area and the crew members were told to coordinate with local village officials to ensure compliance with maritime safety requirements.
