Freaky Friday came out in theaters in 2003. It introduced a lot of us to Tess and Anna Coleman.
A mother and daughter team portrayed by Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. Essentially, they were at odds with each other and had a mystical experience where they learnt a major life lesson while learning to walk literally in each other’s shoes (and bodies).
Now, 22 years later, Freakier Friday does the same thing. Times two. Two pairs now end up switching so the entire family can learn and understand one another. It still resonates even with its simple plot lines because this is a movie about the heart. In the age of superheroes and villains, a simple story about parents and children that delivers pure entertainment stands out.
What's more, the same cast came back together to deliver this heartwarming tale. Curtis and Lohan come back along with a bunch of the same cast from before. And their story continues flawlessly. To those who’ve watched Freaky Friday and loved it years ago (or in readiness for this movie), the transition was effortlessly smooth and natural.
I watched the first Freaky Friday (1976) with Jodie Foster in my childhood. Loved it. Loved the 2003 version, and now with the 2025 sequel, I felt the satisfying snap of a story circle falling into place.
For Filipino fans, this sequel became all the more special because of Manny Jacinto who plays Lohan’s fiancé this time around. This well-loved Filipino-born Canadian snagged everyone’s attention with his gripping turn playing Qimir in the recent Star Wars series, The Acolyte. His appearance in Freakier Friday just brought an extra thrill to all Pinoys everywhere. His role in this movie stands out in stark contrast to his Qimir in that it brought grins and giggles to everyone’s faces.
Freakier Friday is best after you’ve watched Freaky Friday (Disney+). Just so you’ll understand the many, many innuendos and references. It adds to the total enjoyment of the film. However, the movie in itself stands on its own as well. Special shout out to parents with preteens…this is a must-watch! Freakier Friday opens in theaters today, Aug. 6. And it's freakishly good!
