Akbayan Party-list Rep. Perci Cendaña took up the cudgels for showbiz personality Vice Ganda amid the social media bashing the latter was receiving over a concert skit that offended pro-Duterte netizens.
Cendaña, a second-termer in the House of Representatives, even praised Vice Ganda for going as far as he did with his "jetski holiday" joke.
"Speaking truth to power is most potent when it makes people laugh. lbig sabihin tagos na tagos (It meant the message hit home)," the congressman wrote on Facebook Sunday night, Aug. 10.
"Mabuhay ka Meme Vice Ganda, salamat sa paninindigan. #Jetski (Long live Vice Ganda, thank you for your stance.)
Last Aug. 8 during his performance with Regine Velasquez at the “Superdivas” concert at Smart Araneta Coliseum, Vice Ganda cranked out his version of the viral British airline commercial-slash-meme that starts with the line, "Nothing beats a Jet2 holiday".
“Nothing beats a jet ski holiday, right now from Manila to the West Philippine Sea via jetski. Get unlimited water bombing from Chinese vessels and a free trip to The Hague by the ICC. Promo applies to DDS only. Pinklawans and BBMs are prohibited. Huwag niyo akong subukan, mga p***** i** niyo!" Vice Ganda said.
Behind Vice Ganda during this particular skit were back-up dancers holding a sign that read, "Jetski holiday".
The references to former president Rodrigo Duterte were unmistakable: Years ago, the ex-leader made a famous campaign promise to ride a jet ski all the way to the Spratly Islands to plant the Philippine flag there; not only was this promise unfulfilled, but his eventual administration was viewed a subservient to the Chinese government particularly on the issue of the West Philippine Sea (WPS).
Vice Ganda also mentioned the ICC or International Criminal Court, where Duterte was being detained for a charge of crimes against humanity; and DDS, which in the context of the joke meant "Diehard Duterte Supporters".
The cuss at the end of the joke was also delivered in a voice mimicking the once tough-talking former president.
Cendaña is a critic of the Dutertes.
