ILOILO CITY – Two books were launched on the Indigenous Peoples of Panay and Guimaras Islands in time for the International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples (IPs) on Saturday.
“Panagway” and “Bádbad” were unveiled at the Iloilo City campus of the University of the Philippines Visayas.
Both books tackle cultural narratives, traditions, and lived experiences of the Ati and Panay Bukidnon peoples.
Panagway is a book about the Ati IPs of Panay and Guimaras Islands. It was authored by Prof. Frances Anthea R. Redison, Kyla Agnes L. Ramirez, and Theodore Ricardo R. Bautista.
Bádbad is about the Panay Bukidnon IPs. It was written by Prof. Jose R. Taton Jr. and Josie Jane T. Tambirao.
These books were based from archival materials, secondary sources, unpublished materials, and interviews with the academe and civil society who have worked with the IP communities.
Prof. Martin G. Genodepa and Anna Razel L. Ramirez were the editors of both books with publication channeled through UP Visayas’ Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and Extension (OVCRE) while the Office for Initiatives in Culture and the Arts (OICA) implemented the project.
Also present during the launching were UP Visayas Chancellor Clement Camposano, UP Visayas Vice Chancellor Encarnacion Emilia Yap, UP Visayas Professor Emeritus Alicia Magos, and members of the Ati IPs and Panay Bukidnon IPs.
