The Siargao Airport expansion, launched on Friday, Aug. 8, marks a key step in transforming the island into a world-class gateway, the Department of Tourism (DOT) said.
Tourism growth, according to DOT Secretary Christina Garcia-Frasco, requires not only natural attractions but also strong foundations such as upgraded facilities, reliable connectivity, and quality services to reach its full potential.
She said the DOT will soon open a Tourist Rest Area and the island’s first Tourist First Aid Facility, complementing the airport expansion and the cruise port terminal to enhance the safety, comfort, and overall experience of travelers.
Set for completion in 2026, the project will increase the terminal’s capacity from 200 to at least 750 passengers at any given time.
It will also raise the number of check-in counters from three to nine and add more restrooms for travelers.
The terminal’s floor area will more than double from 716 to 1,531 square meters, providing a more spacious and convenient gateway for visitors.
The upgraded facility will also showcase Siargao’s “island vibe” through Filipino-inspired design elements, including the Love The Philippines logo.
The initiative forms part of the DOT’s National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) 2023-2028, approved by President Marcos, which focuses on infrastructure enhancement, accessibility improvement, and visitor experience upgrades in priority destinations.
Siargao, which recorded 112,510 tourist arrivals in the first quarter of 2025—77,202 domestic and 35,308 foreign—remains one of the country’s premier surfing and leisure hubs.
Surigao del Norte First District Representative Francisco “Lalo” Matugas expressed full provincial support for the project, citing its role in driving economic recovery and sustaining tourism-based livelihoods across the island’s nine municipalities.
