Tropical depression Fabian to exit PAR tonight; tropical storm Podul may enter August 10
Storm to be named 'Gorio' once it enters PAR
PAGASA
Tropical depression Fabian is expected to exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) Friday night, Aug. 8, as it moves west-northwestward, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA).
As of 4 p.m. Friday, Fabian was located 245 kilometers west of Laoag City, Ilocos Norte.
It had maximum sustained winds of 45 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 55 kph.
PAGASA weather specialist Benison Estareja said no tropical cyclone wind signal has been raised, as Fabian is not expected to directly affect the country’s weather.
Another cyclone to enter PAR
Meanwhile, a tropical storm with the international name Podul was located 2,410 kilometers east of extreme Northern Luzon as of 4 p.m.
It had maximum sustained winds of 75 kph and gusts of up to 90 kph.
Estareja said Podul may gradually intensify into a severe tropical storm by Saturday, Aug. 9, and could reach typhoon category by Sunday, Aug. 10.
He added that the weather disturbance may enter PAR by Sunday, and will be given the local name “Gorio.”
Estareja said there is a low probability that Podul will develop into a super typhoon or make landfall in the country, as of the latest analysis.
However, its outer rainbands may bring rains to extreme Northern Luzon, particularly over Batanes and Babuyan Islands, by Tuesday, Aug. 12, or Wednesday, Aug. 13.
The tropical cyclone may exit PAR by midweek.
Weather outlook
On Saturday, the southwest monsoon or “habagat” will continue to bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, Quezon, Oriental and Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Cagayan, Isabela, Aurora, Camarines Norte, and Antique.
The rest of the country is expected to experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with chances of isolated rain showers or thunderstorms, especially in the afternoon or evening.
From Sunday to Monday, the habagat will bring cloudy skies with scattered rain showers and thunderstorms over Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, Zamboanga Peninsula, and Palawan.
During this period, Podul may already be inside PAR as Gorio, although it is not expected to have any direct impact on the country just yet.
From Tuesday to Wednesday, the potential effects of Gorio may begin to be felt in extreme Northern Luzon, particularly in Batanes and Babuyan Islands, as the system moves westward.
At the same time, the habagat will continue to affect Oriental Mindoro, Occidental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, Palawan, Western Visayas, Negros Island Region, and Zamboanga Peninsula, bringing scattered rain showers and thunderstorms.
From Thursday, Aug. 14, to Friday, Aug. 15, the southwest monsoon may shift slightly northward, resulting in scattered rains and thunderstorms over the western sections of Luzon and Visayas.
The rest of the country is expected to experience generally fair weather, with partly cloudy to cloudy skies and brief rain showers or localized thunderstorms in the afternoon or evening.
