Tariff fears overshadow GDP gain, dragging PSEi down

The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) dipped despite the slightly higher gross domestic product for the second quarter, as sentiment was affected after Trump said tariffs would be slapped on semiconductor imports.
The main index shed 5.96 points or 0.09 percent to close at 6,364.69 on Thursday, Aug. 7, as Industrials led the decline while Services and Banks offset some of the loss.
Volume amounted to 685 million shares worth P6.26 billion as losers beat gainers 124 to 73 with 42 unchanged.
“The PSEi was down as the market absorbs the recent GDP news, some investors might have expected stronger results following the solid performance of the agriculture sector,” said Regina Capital Development Corp. Managing Director Luis Limlingan.
He added that, “several companies released their earnings today, impacting both the index and the broader market.”
Philstocks Financial Research Manager Japhet Tantiangco said “The local market declined this Thursday to as low as 6,310.97 (down 0.94 percent ) as investors digested our second quarter GDP data. Economic growth came in at 5.5 percent, posting a marginal improvement from the prior quarter’s 5.4 percent and slower than the same period last year’s 6.5 percent.”
He noted that, “US President Donald Trump’s plan to impose 100 percent tariffs on semiconductor and chip imports except for firms producing in the US also weighed on market sentiment.”
