Senator Alan Peter Cayetano has urged Congress to give the same focus to pressing national concerns the same way it poured so much effort into the impeachment case against Vice President Sara Duterte.
Cayetano pointed this out as he defended his “yes” vote on the motion to archive the Articles of Impeachment which the Senate deliberated on Wednesday night, August 6.
“Hindi tayo makawala, eh. Ang daming mas importanteng isyu, pero nakapako tayo sa isyu na ito (We can't get away from it, eh. There are many more important issues, but we are stuck on this issue),” Cayetano said during his interpellation.
The senator said it is imperative to provide same attention to equally pressing national issues while making sure that political investigations will continue.
He pointed out that the country’s long-standing problems such as corruption, stunting, flooding, and the growing debt as equally deserving of public scrutiny.
“Tuloy-tuloy na ang mga imbestigasyon na ‘yan kasi ganoon ang pulitika sa Pilipinas. I hope na y’ung sa baha, corruption, smuggling, at sa dami-rami nating utang, ay imbestigahan din (Those investigations are ongoing because that's how politics is in the Philippines. I hope that the ones about the floods, corruption, smuggling, and our huge debts will also be investigated),” he pointed out.
While public accountability must always be pursued, he said it must be done at the right time and through the correct process.
But as far as looking at the Supreme Court’s decision on the impeachment case, Cayetano said “it is solid and it does not take away the power of the House to initiate impeachment.”
“Sa February 6 (2026) po sigurado na ‘yan (It will surely push through in February6, 2026),” he said.
“We in this room are all for accountability but tama y’ung sinabi ng Supreme Court na dapat ay sa tamang panahon at tamang proseso (But the SC was right when it said it should be done at the right time and the right process),” he added.
